KAA 2021 Plans and Goals

Hello fellow audiologists, and happy new year! Most of us are ready to put 2020 behind us and move forward into a prosperous and healthy 2021. We would like to quickly go over some of our plans and goals for the coming year.

Membership renewal season is upon us, and it is time to renew your commitment to your fellow audiologists across the commonwealth by renewing your membership with KAA. The mission of KAA is to promote quality hearing and balance care by advancing the profession of Audiology through leadership, advocacy, education, public awareness and support of research. We do that best when we speak loudly with one voice. There are nearly 200 audiologists in Kentucky and our hope is that every single one sees the value in supporting their professional organization. You can renew online or by printing an application and mailing it with a check to KAA headquarters.

As you know, state advocacy at its core is vital to the success of our profession here in Kentucky. In a recent article published by Dr. Kim Cavitt titled “Tackling the Biggest Challenges Facing Audiology and Its Future One Month at a Time: Audiology Status in Healthcare”, one of the biggest challenges described by audiologists is how we are viewed by consumers, legislators, physicians, administrators, etc. The article also notes that only a small percentage of audiologists devote financial resources to progress state-level advocacy issues that can help meet the challenges mentioned by our colleagues in the aforementioned article. We bring this up because we have been working extensively with members of the state legislature to expand efforts for single licensure status, and we need member support to progress any advocacy efforts forward for audiology.

Please donate what you can for our advocacy efforts by clicking here. If all members of KAA donated $25-$100 for advocacy efforts this year, we can increase our political effectiveness and lobbying support within our organization.

We encourage you to discuss our legislative issues with your Kentucky State Senators and State House Representatives. Now is the time to reach out and make the needs of our profession heard with members of legislative leadership before the single licensure bill and the interstate compact bill potentially go before committee and vote within the House and Senate. We are happy to find your Senate/House District information so you can advocate for the profession, and would gladly provide talking points that may encourage favor for our legislative goals. During this unprecedented time in our current history, members of leadership are more likely to meet electronically or over the phone with their constituents.

If you are willing to advance the profession by advocating with your district senators and representatives and need their contact information, please email KAA Immediate Past President Dr. Casey Rutledge Roof directly at casey.rutledgeroof@uoflhealth.org and provide your name and address with zip code, and she will provide the information for you. You may also click here and type in your address to find their contact information and your Senate and House District information.

Remember we are a volunteer organization that relies on member support and resources to advance advocacy efforts. Let’s make 2021 a year for legislative change within our profession! Thank you in advance for your contributions!

Cheers to the New Year!
